6 - Four Months of Orion

(above) First camping experience

We have had our Orion over four months now. It's mostly been in storage since the end of October with a couple of brief outings for exercise. I put Sta-Bil in the gas and I run the generator every three weeks or so. I have done a couple of projects in it during the time. I've had time to itemize problems, annoyances, and changes/improvements made.

Problems:

  1. Sewer outlet not operable - fixed
  2. Rear mount broken on drawers by refrig - fixed
  3. Bath faucet drips into cabinet
  4. Open gap under couch between floor and wall
  5. Awning strip lights don't work
  6. GFCI in bathroom trips
  7. TV mounted too low for remote to work - fixed

Annoyances:

  1. Switches by entry door not labeled
  2. Switch at water entry port not labeled
  3. No interior privacy curtain provided for cab
  4. Step to bed not at proper angle; rungs hard on bare feet
  5. Fresh water tank drain valve not easily accessible

Improvements:

  1. 1-1/4" to 2" hitch adapter
  2. Solar windshield outside cover
  3. Add corner pockets to OEM windshield cover
  4. Interior privacy curtain for front of cab
  5. Drinking water filter and faucet on kitchen sink
  6. 2" memory foam mattress topper + pad
  7. Narrow board as shelf behind couch to fill gap

I will elaborate on these in successive postings. Problems 1 and 2 required immediate attention, and I fixed them myself. I also fixed Problem 7 by remounting the TV. Problem 3 was causing about a cup of water a day to drip onto the floor inside the bath sink cabinet, requiring a catch bowl. I have an appointment at a Forest River dealer coming up for warranty work on Problems 3-6. Overall, considering the price of an Orion, the number and severity of issues is relatively minor (so far !!). No RV comes out perfect and they all have something that could be better.

  1. Hello Bob,
We're looking hard at either the Orion T24RB with the "club lounge" barrel chair/table OR a used (2012 or newer) Phoenix Cruiser 2400. We've got a 2003 Trail Lite 211S which we bought new, now with 110,000 fun miles on it. We'd love to stay small but the new small seems to be 24 ft. The Orion comes out on top of its direct competition (REV and the WBO Trend/Viva) but I've got questions. Here's an email I sent to Coachmen sales but perhaps you can help me out:

    Hello Nate,
First off, I'm here in southern Oregon on I-5 near the California boarder in Ashland. Your web site shows me only two "local" dealers, one in Coeur d'Alene, ID and the other in Canada on Vancouver Island. That can't be true so help me out. My ZIP code is 97520.
Next, I have some questions for you to answer:
Is this a 4-season motorhome, meaning are the tanks and water lines either inside the coach or fitted with heating pads?
What is the true length of the motorhome on the Transit chassis? I see differing numbers.
Is there a spare tire and if so where is it?
Do either of the front cab seats swivel?
Are heated cab seats an option?
Are the living area side windows slide or awning opening?
What is the size of the refrigerator in cubic feet?
Is the "club lounge" with barrel chairs still available in the 2017/2018 model years?
Does the club lounge table require using the support leg to the floor?
Is the bed's mattress the new iCool memory foam or what?
Is there a house inverter option available and at what size and price?
Is a convection microwave and option?
Is an on-demand hot water heater (like Truma) an option?
There are three roof vents. Where are they and what kind are they (generic, FantasticFan, MaxxAir, etc)?
    Rubber or fiberglass roof?
Does the A/C come with heat strips?
Is there an option for leveling jacks?
    Thanks,
    Gary Swanson

I'm getting a bit leary with (supposedly) no dealer in sight, even though I'm an accomplished Mr. Fixit. Some folks out there are bad mouthing Coachmen, Dynamax (both Forest River brands) and to a lesser degree WBO, but these guys are the only ones making this style of rig which is so reminiscent of the old TREKs. So if you have answers and words of wisdom I'd appreciate an email at ograpeswani@gmail.com . Thanks!

    3. I was reviewing the blog comments and saw yours about the water tank leak and drain. It's been a couple of years, but I hope you got your issues resolved. If not, or any other questions, just post again.
